Actually the type was part of an embossing system that I helped TM's boss sell on EBay. Most of the system had seen almost no use.
As a kid, I had the opportunity to tour a newspaper printing office that still used the type trays and letters. I don't remember the exact process, but somehow the letters were stamped onto a lead drum to make the "master" for printing a page. They had to "build" and print each page individually.

Where did you find these old relics? I used to do typesetting, back in the late 80's, but even then, it was all by computer... no lead.
